Loving Kindness

I’ve been turning to loving kindness practice lately as an antidote for animosity. I don’t know if it actually affects others, but as it is a way of entering a shared field, it’s possible! It brings me a sense of peace and refreshed perspective. I even do it for the Big Orange Cheeto. Why? It cools the fires of fear and hatred in me. It helps me remember that everyone is just trying to feel better. The majority of us have a confused perspective on reality, and forget the ultimate truth of our interdependence.

How to practice:

Sanskrit: Maitri

Pali: Metta (more popular)

It’s the first of the Brahmaviharas, or, four limitless minds, and has to do with cultivating friendliness toward oneself and others.

Typically, you start close in, with oneself, making aspirations for happiness and wellbeing. Then you extend it to those you like, neutral people, and then people with whom you have trouble. Finish with making these wishes for all beings.

My version of the recitation is:

May you have happiness and the causes of happiness

May you be free from suffering and the causes of suffering

May you awaken to the light of your own true nature
